For example, let's say a dreamer is driving a sports car and they are racing to get away from something or someone, then they can identify it as a personal situation they are fleeing from. Growth of Human Being After 22 Years of Age

Human beings are known to grow in height right from birth to around 20 to 22 years. Although growth of human beings is dependent on many factors like gene, weather conditions, food and health conditions, but biologically men grow taller than women. There are certain reasons for the difference in height. Women stop growing in height after 15 to 16 years because after puberty the long bones stop growing in height due to closing of epiphyseal plates. Besides the effect of endocrine glands have function in respect of determining of height of human beings. Sometimes over-secretion or under-secretion can lead to gigantism or dwarfism. How To Prevent Dangerous Snakes From Coming Around Your Home: Local And Conventional Methods

Though scientists say that the majority of snakes in the world are not dangerous, I don’t think anyone would like to take that chance. Personally, I have a lot of respect for snakes and that respect makes me keep my distance from them. I wouldn’t want to find out personally if a snake is dangerous or not. A single bite from a snake could put a lot of strain to your well being. In my view, I believe all the snakes in Nigeria are dangerous. I might be paranoid, but I think the harsh weather conditions and rugged atmosphere must have made all the snakes dangerous and desperate. Now you laugh; but I am dead serious. In Nigeria, there are many species of snakes and though am not an expert in snakes, they all seem dangerous. I would gladly pay a large sum to see a snake charmer charm a snake from Nigeria. That would be a sight. Due to so many snakes found here, we have developed several local and conventional ways of chasing away snakes and preventing them from coming into huma...

Why People React Differently to the Very Same Situations

My fascination with psychology started at a very young age. I was different from everyone I knew, yet I never knew why.  I never had the life I read about in those grade school readers. My grandmother, with whom I lived, was nothing like the mother in the Dick and Jane series of first grade readers that baby boomers learned from. I was always wondering about human nature. I had questions about how people lived or reacted and most of the time when I was old enough and finally realized there was a discipline called psychology, I was eager to take courses in CEGEP.   I loved it so much that eventually I went on to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in psychology and then onto a Master's Degree in counseling psychology. Throughout my seven years of learning psychology, I was particularly fascinated by how people react differently to the same situation.  For example, a man might get his new suit splashed by a car driving by and he might be angry, indifferent, run home and change, o...

What Are the Major Sources of Motivation?

Motivation comes from several different sources; some of these sources are internal, while others are external. Internal motives push a person toward a desired goal, a preferable outcome. External motives pull the person toward to goal or incentive they wish to obtain at the end of the task. Motivation relies on biological and psychological variables (Deckers, 2010, p.8). For example, a man who is trying to lose weight to regain his health is motivated by an internal desire to feel well and happy. The incentive, or end goal, is that once the weight has been lost, he will be fit enough to take up tennis, a sport they enjoyed many years ago before gaining extra weight. “Motivation is the impetus or reason for doing the behavior; it initiates the action” (Deckers, 2010, p. 7). Environment The environment also plays a significant role in motivation. The value of an end goal is an environmental variable on motivation. The removal of undesirable consequence is a great motivator...

The Psychological Impact That Broken Promises Have on a Marriage

One thing that will ruin any relationship is to start off with unrealistic promises.  Oh yes when we were young or in the stage of romantic love we make promises such as “I will love you forever.”  Even the traditional weddings vows state” till death do us part.”  But in today’s society when relationships are so fragile, absolute promises are hard to keep. A good and solid relationship is built on trust, and what is very important is a person’s integrity.  Too many broken promises will break that trust.  Now of course, when we talk about the biggies like the two mentioned above, we need to know there is a commitment before entering into what we believe is a solid and lasting relationship.  There has got to be the affirmations such as, “I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” but, “I will love you forever” is not something that happens in all modern day relationships given th...

How to Get People to Stop Talking over You and Listen

When you are speaking and someone interrupts and talks over you it can make you feel a variety of emotions. You may feel angry and frustrated, or you may feel small and overlooked. Being ignored isn’t a pleasant experience and is often received as a sign of rejection. There are a variety of reasons why someone may talk over you: They are excited to see you and brimming over with enthusiasm. They have something very important to say. They are ignorant and unskilled in the art of communication. They are rude and obnoxious. You are not speaking with power. Everyone gets interrupted now and then due to the first four reasons above. However if you are being interrupted regularly the chances are that you are not speaking with power behind your words. When your intention to be heard isn’t felt other people are less likely to listen to you. Sensitive individuals who are skilled communicators may not talk over you, but the average person will butt in and over-ride what yo...

The Left Facing Swastika

The swastika is a symbol which has only recently become a symbol of hate, at least in terms of the amount of time it has existed in society.  In Buddhism and Hinduism, it is known as a symbol of good luck, perhaps representing eternity, or the two different types of forces in the endless cycle of death and rebirth called Samsara. There is the right facing swastika, or the one highjacked by the Nazi party, which represents the evolution of the universe (pravritti), and the left-facing swastika, which symbolizes the involution of the universe (Nivritti, the process that allows creation to happen). The left facing swastika is most commonly known as a symbol of Buddhism, and is used on maps to indicate a Buddhist temple, and the symbol is still found on many ancient temples, and other works of art.  What were the reasons behind the Nazis using the well known symbol from Hinduism and Buddhism? Did Hitler actually understand what it meant? The real question is, did Hitler an...

Inferiority and Superiority Complexes

Even though Jung disagreed with a lot of Freud’s sexual instincts theory Alfred Adler (1870-1937) was less enthused about his theory.  Freud and Adler had a falling out of sorts over his disinterest in his mentor’s theory.  Adler’s theory was largely based on his own life story. He was a sickly child growing up in Vienna.  Adler struggled with feeling inferior to his peers because of being sick.  He compensated by trying to find ways to be superior to his peers. These experiences led him to think of the important people attach to their social environment and how they just really want to fit in. He stressed how important it was for people to work towards goals that would enhance their personal abilities and have them blend well in the society in which they lived. Adler like his contemporary Carl Jung provided the antecedents for humanistic psychology which would follow later on in the 20th century. Inferiority superiority complexes Inferiority c...

Why Its Important to Listen to Other People

When we are young we learn a great deal at a fast pace. One of the reasons for this is that we ask a lot of questions, often to the annoyance of our parents and teachers who can find our constant questions challenging. As we get older we are likely to drop questioning the world around us in favor of talking and giving our point of view. While it’s good to have opinions and to be able to take center stage when it comes to communication now and then, doing so too often can result in us failing to learn anything new. This is why people who listen are often wiser than those who love to talk but fail to hear what other people say. Good listeners give themselves opportunities to understand other people’s viewpoints and widen their own. They learn from the mistakes of others as-well as their own, which means they learn faster too. Pixabay When people talk all the time they block out opportunities to expand their knowledge. At the same time they hog the limelight. It isn&rsquo...

Psychology: Origin, History, Different Branches

Psychology is the study of human behaviour. It covers everything that a person thinks or feels. Since it is all-encompassing, you will find psychologists in every field of study under the sun.  The history of psychology originated in the antiquities. Yet, it only became a recognized field on its own in the mid-1800's and for this reason, it is known as a fairly new discipline of study. The origins of psychology germinated in the fields of medicine and philosophy. We can thank the ancient Greeks for this. From the field of science, Hippocrates, known as the father of medicine, was one of the greatest influences on modern-day psychology.  Similarly, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the great ancient Greeks philosophers, were among the greatest influences on modern-day psychology from the philosophical perspective.  As a result of the tremendous influence of both these fields on psychology, there once was an ongoing debate as to whether psychology is a science or an art. B...

One Point Healing - Acupressure Point K 27

Few years ago, I attended a 'positive thinking' course based on 'to boost teaching skills'. The participants were taught some brain gym exercises. One of these brain gym exercise was to rub 'energy or brain buttons' on the chest (near collar. At that time I didn't know about 'acupressure' and learned it as a 'brain gym' exercise and used to teach it to my pre-k kids. This brain gym exercise was really helpful as kids enjoyed pressing these two points with one hand and I was happy to see my class more focused and less hyper. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupressure point K 27 or 'Elegant Mansion' on your chest is an effective point for relieving throat, chest, and back pain. K 27 also opens your ability to breathe deeply, which is the key to releasing endorphins, the neuro-chemicals that relieve pain. It helps reinforce immune system functioning by strengthening the respiratory system. It helps boost your natural energies and resets...

Why Do Some People Just Give Up On Life?

Why do some people just give up on life? Is there something about their life that doesn't seem worth striving for? I will attempt to answer that question in this article, and give you an idea of why people decide to give up.  First of all, life isn't easy, and some people have it a lot harder than others. For some people, giving up isn't an option, as you have to work hard just to survive, and so for them, giving up literally means death.  That's true for anyone to some degree, although if you are in a country with a good welfare system, you may be able to live for a long time without doing very much at all.  Sometimes people are depressed, or disillusioned with the world, and feel that they will never get what they want, so why bother. Sometimes this is due to a chemical imbalance, although it may also be due to environmental factors.  What drives a person to strive hard to succeed in their chosen path? It's a combination of things, but it mostly comes down to ...

HOUSES in Dreams - Interpretations, Meanings and What They Represent

Throughout history, dreams have been described as a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep, yet there is much more to dreams than just a release of random things that are filtered through the subconscious. Listed below are interpretations of what it means to dream of a house to help give clarity on what message these dreams are trying to reveal. House If someone dreams of a house, the subconscious is trying to reveal a message about their personal life. A house in a sense represents the person, the dreamer and showcases their life as a whole. However, each room can also represent topics or details about that person's life that pertains to events or connections with other people. The exterior condition of the house tells a lot about a person's mental, emotional and physical health. Let's say the person sees the house as a disheveled, dull yellow. Well, the deteriorated condition of the house tells me th...

What is Attention? - Defining the Concept of Attention

Attention is the process of directing attention to a specific task. Sometimes, directing attention can be done without conscious thought of the task performed. For instance, when an individual is proficient at operating a motor vehicle, operating the individual parts of the car are done automatically. When approaching a corner, the driver will signal his intention to turn by activating the blinkers, and can do so without diverting all his attention to that task. Other tasks require full, conscious attention to be completed, and although attention can be shifted between tasks, the cognitive processes required for each determine how much confusion can occur. Listening to a song and trying to recall a tune from an old favorite is difficult unless attention is completely on one or the other. Attention draws on the various underlying cognitive processes necessary to complete a task. Some tasks might require hearing, but not vision. Another task may require vision, but not hearing. However...

Five Major Divisions of the Brain - What Are the Major Divisions of the Brain and Their Associated Psychological Functions?

Regardless of which psychology field an individual is considering as a major, it is of vital importance to understand the five major divisions of the brain and what functions they serve. The brain is a complex topic of discussion, and each of the five divisions of the brain is responsible for more than just the functions listed within this text. In addition to the functions listed, it is also an amazing fact that the brain has the ability to rewire itself to compensate for any an area that might be damaged from disease, disorder or accident. Furthermore, the myth concerning the brain capacity being used is a mere 10% should be dismisses immediately. Scientist now understands that the entire brain is utilized, although nowhere close to its full potential. The term used for the amazing incidence of “rewiring” in brain is neuroplasticity. As well as enabling new locations in the brain to compensate for the damaged areas, it is common knowledge that existing senses can be hone...

Freud's Theory of Child Sexual Abuse and Female Sexual Fantasies

As Freud’s views are not popular all that much today, they were not popular in some areas back then.  He was considered the guru of psychology in his day; well he had to be, he was the one that founded clinical psychology; though there were research psychologists before him.  One of the areas that Freud met with controversy was the area of child sexual abuse. Freud postulated that his female patients were having mental problems as adults because they were raped by their father as children.  He was persistent with this theory until 1897.  He then recanted. He sent a letter to his friend Wilhelm Fleiss that he now believed these stories his patients were telling him were mere fantasies.  How much of this was his true feeling and how much was caving in to the pressure from his colleagues we will never know. This change did have a significant effect on the development of psychoanalysis.  He took the search for the roots of the problems away from the en...

Protect from Hidden Dangers in the Sauna, Steam Room or Hot Tub

Going to a spa is a great way to relax sore muscles from workouts, sports, or a stressful day. However, there are hidden dangers in your favorite sauna, steam room, or hot tub because these are used by the public and are rarely cleaned in between uses. Sauna: The wooden benches and floors are porous and difficult to clean and disinfect. Protect yourself by wearing appropriate shower shoes or slippers and sitting on a towel while using the sauna. These will act as barriers between the sauna surface and your skin. Avoid the sauna i...

Color Prana: Electric Violet Pranic Energy

There are two types of violet pranic energy: ordinary violet pranic energy and electric violet pranic energy. The former appears as luminous violet which is derived from the surrounding prana such as air, ground, and solar pranas. The latter appears as brilliant white with light violet at the periphery. This is derived from the higher self or higher soul where its entry point is the crown chakra, and hence is called divine energy or soul energy. Electric violet prana energy has the properties of all the other color pranas and is many times more powerful than ordinary violet pranic energy. It has a rapid regenerating effect on damaged organs and nerves, and also a very strong disinfecting effect. Electric violet pranic energy has a consciousness of its own and is very effective for rapid healing of severe ailments. Dark electric violet pranic energy has a destructive effect on most people and can be used in treating tumors or cancers. The part to be treated has to be energized first w...

Non-delicate organs can also be gradually regenerated by energizing with light whitish green, light whitish orange, then light whitish red. The interaction of these three color pranas will gradually regenerate the affected organ. Energize the affected organ directly without passing through the corresponding chakra. This technique is used to regenerate the lungs, kidneys and liver. Type G Body Diet

Getting rid of type G body fat can be hard, but not impossible.  Women fall into this body type more than men do, simply because of the feminine hormones, which naturally give us narrow shoulders and broader hips. The “G” stands for "Gonadal" type individuals, governed by the Gonadal glands and the pear-shaped bodies, collect fat in the hips, thighs and buttocks. Gonadal glands are connected to our metabolic rate, they also control how our bodies burn calories and store fat. Meal Schedules Avoid spices like capsaicin and turmeric, high fat foods, such butter, cream cheese and heavy creams, they promote fat collection for G type bodies. Meals should consist of a light breakfast in the morning, a light lunch 4 hours later and a filling dinner 5 hours after lunch with absolutely no eating between breakfast and lunch or after dinner. How To Deal With Your Own Mortality: The Fear Of Death

Everyone has to deal with their own mortality at some point, because nobody lives forever. The fear of death is perhaps the primary cause for religion, and belief in the afterlife.  While religion may be comforting to some, even very religious people still have a strong fear of death, which is a natural instinct in every animal.  First of all, death itself is neither a good thing, nor a bad thing, it's simply the lack of life, the lack of consciousness and experiences. If you had to say what happens when you die in a scientific way, your molecules simply disperse, and become part of other organisms.  In this way, re-incarnation is proven, but the same thing also happens while you are alive. It is said that inside your body right now is at least one water or oxygen molecule that existed at one time inside the bodies of Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Shakespeare, or any historical figure you care to name.  The real question is whether your unique consciousness actually ...

Pranic Healing: Cleansing the Blood and Internal Organs Techniques

Cleansing the Internal Organs Technique The solar plexus chakra is the clearing house for pranic energies from the lower and higher chakras. It is located at the center of the trunk where most of the internal organs are located. The internal organs can be cleansed by sweeping the solar plexus chakra and by energizing it with light whitish blue, light whitish green, and light whitish orange. This is clairvoyantly seen as green and orange pranas gradually spreading to and cleansing the internal organs and the whole body. Blue prana is used to make the technique safer. This healing technique can rapidly cleanse a congested solar plexus chakra which is a major cause of many severe ailments. It is very important that the orange prana projected should be light whitish orange prana, not medium or dark orange prana. This healing technique should be used only by the more experienced advanced pranic healers. Scan the patient, then rescan during pranic treatment. Apply general sweeping twice...

Repressed Sexual Urges and Neurotic Anxiety

We often toss the word neurotic around saying quite easily that this person is “your classic neurotic” but how many of us really know what being neurotic really means? We can thank Freud for the term neurotic or neurosis. As you can see the word resembles neurons, which are the brain cells.  It is not surprising considering Freud was a neurologist long before he became the father of psychology. A neurotic is said to be a person with unrealistic fears and by that definition many classic therapists will describe the world as being neurotic. Note: Remember the classic paradigm looks for illness whereas modern therapists often look for other solutions for client issues before deciding they are mentally ill. Freud had two separate theories about neurosis.  His first theory was published in 1895. In the first theory, he postulated that neurotic anxiety was caused by blocked unconscious impulses.  These impulses could be blocked due to unfulfilled sexual tension...

The Psychology of Boasting: Crazy Things People Brag About

Human psychology is undoubtedly one of the most difficult subjects to study and produce concrete evidence with sufficient, reliable data when conducting such research. So much of the information gleaned is subjective, and dependant solely on information gathered from test subjects' responses. Why do people react in certain ways? What drives one person to become anti-social under the same conditions that another will behave completely different? What is the root of a mental disorder? These are all questions that have been scrutinized for decades - even centuries - and given a plethora of answers, some of which can be documented with physiological data and others which rely heavily on logical speculation. Human behaviour, and the reasons for that behaviour, will continue to be somewhat of a mystery, regardless of all the theories behind the “answers.” Take, for example, the subject of boasting. People have been bragging, no doubt, since the socialization of man (imagine. . ....

Factors Influencing The Loss and Grief Responses

Spiritual Beliefs Spiritual beliefs and practices greatly influence both a person's reaction to loss and subsequent behavior. Most religious groups have practices related to dying, and these are often important to the client and support people. To provide support at a time of death, nurses need to understand the client's particular beliefs and practices. Gender The gender roles into which many people are socialized in the United States and Canada affect their reactions at times of loss. Men are frequently expected to "be strong" and show very little emotion during grief, whereas it is acceptable for women to show grief by crying. Often when a wife dies, the husband, who is the chief mourner, is expected to repress his own emotions and to comfort sons and daughters in their grieving. Gender roles also affect the significance of the body image changes to clients. A man might consider his facial scar to be "macho", but a woman might consider hers ugly. Thus the wom...

The Diathesis-Stress Model

As we discussed previously, no one psychological school of thought really explains mental illness.  Therefore, a more general approach which is not tied to any psychological school of thought seems to be the best way to go.  The diathesis-stress model incorporates the biological, psychological, and environmental conditions which can lead to a mental illness.  Furthermore, the clinician is not tied to any psychological paradigm such as the learning, cognitive, or biological theories.   The diathesis-stress model will take the good from each of these theories to define and treat mental illness. Basically, the diathesis-stress model determines that a mental disorder such as schizophrenia requires a predisposition towards contracting the disease (diathesis).  It then takes into consideration the environment in which the mentally ill are placed in and the stress or toll on the mind.  All three factors must be present in order for the mental disorder to su...

People Who Hate People, Misanthropes

Humans are generally considered to be social animals. With humanity there are some people who like people more than others, and some people who hate, or distrust other people. A misanthrope is a person who hates humanity. Misanthropy should not be confused with asociality, in which a person simply prefers to be alone, or with anthropophobia, the fear of people, which may in fact stem from a person who is a misanthrope. People, who are introverts, or shy, are not necessarily misanthropes, and neither are pessimists. The word Misanthrope comes from misos, for hatred, and anthropos, for mankind. Ancient philosopher Socrates theorized that a person might come to be a misanthrope as the result of an individual fully trusting somebody only to find out that the person they trusted in was unreliable. The person forms a dislike for the person they trusted and later humanity as a whole. In some cases a victim of bullying could develop a misanthropic attitude. In some cases extreme environmen...

What is Primary Memory?

Primary memory is where information is stored after it is first obtained. The primary memory is also referred to as short-term memory. Information sent to primary memory storage is deciphered and either discarded or retained for later retrieval. Although the information can be stored for a time in the primary memory, it is subject to interference and information can be easily forgotten. Over time, information decays and is lost from the primary memory storage. The capacity of the primary memory varies from one individual to the next, and some types of information is easier to retain than other. According to Willingham (2007), “It appears that material can be coded in primary memory in at least three ways: visuospatially, acoustically (in terms of sound), and semantically (in terms of meaning)” (p. 155 ). Semantics help the primary memory to retain information longer than acoustic or visuospatial, because chunking allows information to be obtained in chunks, such as a poem...

Lordosis: Prevention and Treatment

Prevention of Lordosis The two main causes of lordosis is lack of exercise, excess body-fat or obesity. When we sit a lot continuously, our hip flexors tend to shorten; as a result it pulls the pelvis forward. In the same way, excess fat of the belly will pull the pelvis to the front, and it also makes the pelvis tilt. How To Build Self Esteem After Rejection

How to build self esteem after rejection takes pre-planning before that event takes place. Rejection comes in many forms sometimes with little or no warning that can deeply affect self confidence and severely damage self respect unless preparations are in place. Steps to know about self esteem Little can be done to actually prepare for the devastation of self-worth yet just being aware can be a step in the right direction. Shock still sets in after rejection, but then reality will be known that happiness can and will return with feelings of self confidence restored. Having the beliefs that the healthy self can and will be returning adds to esteem building. Relationships that lead back to self confidence and ones to avoid Focusing on the positive, limit the negative feelings an individual has in any relationship.  Attitude has a huge impact on having a clear vision of a way to a healthy self once again. Feelings of despair only breed low self esteem and...

Defining Motivation - The Relationship Between Motivation and Behavior

Motivation comes from internal and external sources. An internal source of motivation may be a need to accomplish a task to personal satisfaction, while an external motive might be the offer of a promotion for a job well done. Motivation is a move to action with the goal of fulfilling a goal or desire. According to Deckers (2011), “motivation is the impetus or reason for doing the behavior; it initiates the action (p, 7). A move to action may require a person to believe they possess the knowledge and competence to achieve a task (Deckers, p.7).Conversley, if motivation is not present to begin with, no amount of knowledge or competency will make a difference. Motivation can be drawn from numerous sources. The motivation to eat is generally a biological need for food, although psychological motivation may be the desire to meet a friend for dinner and be satisfied not just by act of eating, but also by fulfilling the need for association. Unfortunately, eating when depressed usuall...

Four Types of Social Influence

Social Psychology Social psychology is the scientific study of the influence others have on a person’s behavior (including thoughts and feelings). Within social psychology, it is accepted that people differ from one another, but also that they tend to overestimate their own individuality and uniqueness. Sometimes, individuality shrinks away and people behave as is expected from a social point of view. Research has identified several types of social influence on a person’s behavior, of which four are discussed here: Conformism, Obedience, Deindividuation, and Helping. Conformism Conformism means that one attunes his or her behavior to that of the group one belongs to, without there being a direct ‘order’ to do so. An important experiment here is the Asch-experiment, where a person is shown a line of a certain length and subsequently has to choose a line of the same length from a group of three lines that are shown. This happens in a group, which has be...

Dressing For the Negotiation

Let’s Negotiate To test whether the color of one’s clothes could affect the outcome of a negotiation, an experiment was designed where 48 men and 48 women were asked to negotiate about the import and export of coffee. Since earlier research had shown that sex has an influence when negotiating (men appear to attain better results when negotiating with women, the opposite turned out not to be so), women negotiated only with women, and men with men in this test. The only thing that varied in this experiment, was the color of the test subjects clothes, they either had to put on a white shirt, or a red one. Red For the Best Deal The results showed that both the ‘buyers’ and the ‘sellers’ that wore a red shirt performed markedly better in getting desirable results than their white shirted colleagues. For example, people wearing white appeared to adjust their opening offer more to the red dressed negotiators than the other way around. According to t...

Why People Fear Failure

No-one likes to be thought of as a failure, however failing isn’t always a bad thing. Not succeeding the first or even second time around can help us learn. So why is it that we cringe at the mere thought of failure and hang our heads in shame when we don’t achieve our goals? Perhaps the greatest problem we associate with failure has to do with how we imagine other people view us. The idea that they may not hold us in high regard can be responsible for us holding back instead of trying something new. It can also be the cause of us feeling wretched and losing confidence when we try but don’t succeed. Fear of failure is likely to stem from shame. Shame is a useless emotion unless an immoral act is committed and it prevents someone from repeating the performance. Apart from on such an occasion it can cause deep pain and lower self esteem. The shame we believe failure will bring is far worse than not succeeding. Most people would fear failure much less if they could be...

Chest Pain: Is It Always a Symptom of Heart Attack?

Pain is the body's natural response to a bodily harm which may be somatic or visceral. Somatic pain refers to pain experienced on skin, muscle, joints, bones and ligaments. Visceral pain, on the hand, refers to pain felt in the internal body organs and main body cavities namely the thorax, abdomen and the pelvis. The organs found in the thorax are the lungs and heart, in the abdomen are the bowels, spleen, liver and kidneys, and in the pelvis are the ovaries, bladder and the womb.  It is easy to locate somatic pain but visceral pain is more difficult to pinpoint. It may be a cramping sensation or a vague deep ache. Visceral pain may also be experienced as some type of back pain. The location of the pain may not always be a problem in the specific bodily part. This is termed as referred pain. This is when pain is felt either next to, or at a distance from the origin of an injury or affected body organ. Heart attack, for example, may be felt as pain around the shoulders, back...

Importance of Rest for Good Health

We know a good diet and a good exercise regime are really helpful to keep us fit and healthy. Although, these are very essential for making us healthy but often we underestimate the importance of rest for good health. Many people are so obsessed or over obsessed with exercise that often they over do it. It’s true that physical activities are beneficial for our health but when we do it more than our body’s requirement, this can cause health problems. When body lacks the rest and the sleep, it cannot recharge itself properly. As a result our body becomes tired and jaded and it really lacks the energy for doing its routine works. But there’s more to it; we need rest or our body needs rest for many other reasons as well. Rest is useful in reducing the stress and anxiety. Because when we take rest, both physically and mentally, we remain away from the stressful situation. It allows body to calm down and gather some energy as well. So, rest is extremely important for the m...

Communication Skills: How to Use Active Listening and Open Ended Questions

Whether you work in profession helping and supporting others, or simply want to be a more effective listener and communicator you can benefit from understanding active listening skills and open ended questions. Knowing when to use them can make communication smoother. It can also help people you talk with feel better understood. Open ended questions Open ended questions are the type which illicit a response which is more in depth than simply a yes or know answer. Closed questions can cut a conversation dead quickly, where-as open ended questions help conversation flow while helping you discover information. An example of a close question is: “Do you like it here?” - This type of question will probably receive either a yes or no as an answer. An example of an open question is: “What do you like about it here?” - This question is likely to result in a longer response full of valuable information. There are several good reasons to use open ended questions. T...

Stay Value Neutral When Counseling Clients

It is important to be value neutral with clients to avoid harm by mixing your own values and beliefs with clients that is potentially damaging to their fragile state. According to module 2 lecture (2011), “One of the most important things that the therapist need to do is deal with and resolve his or her own issues before beginning to practice on therapy on others.” When therapists attempt to help clients resolve issues they are dealing with, it makes it extremely difficult to remain neutral or the therapist might confuse themselves over the role they serve. Cultural diversity is a major issue when working with clients from other cultures. Many various cultures and ethnic groups have been denied services, or have been treated unfairly either blatantly or out of ignorance from other counseling professionals. According to Elizabeth Reynolds Welfel, Ph.D. (2010): Attention to multicultural issues is a natural outgrowth of discussions of respect for autonomy, justice, and the ...

Psychology Of A Controlling Personality

Not everyone knows a controlling personality, since not everyone can be controlled. The controlling personality selects those he/she can manipulate and that person allows them to do that. Quite simply stated, a controlling personality is a choice by both the giver and the receiver. Control is a form of dominance. It has the hint of caring, but it really is not fully loaded with care for the person the controller is manipulating. It is a danger if that control is taken as a love or nurturing, since counselors, in private sessions, have invited a controlled person to view the force at which the pressure is applied from another position and another person as well. Controlling someone else is a statement that the personality knows the best, is the smartest, makes all the good decisions and is the top of everything, baring nothing that can be mentioned. No one person is without flaws. There are degrees of controlling, which can stem from mild, moderate, obsessive to shifters. The mild co...

Structuralism and Experimental Psychology

Structuralism began as a new discipline just prior to when the first learning theorists came on the scene. Structuralism was concerned with the structure of the brain and how it affects our ability to think and function. There were several early experimental or structural scientists on the scene such as Wilhelm Wundt (1882 – 1920), the father of experimental psychology. Edward Tichener (1887 – 1927) who was a Cornell University psychologist taught his students on how to report on their experiences when exposed to different situations (stimuli).  The students attempted to establish the building blocks of experience (outside forces) which form our human consciousness.  They observed data, did a lot of introspection and self-observations to come up with their findings. Metronome experiment These experiments were brilliant and so important to the newly developing field.  Wundt devised an experiment where his students were to listen to the clicking of a metron...

Creating Chakral and Auric Shields

Image Credit Since there is tendency for the patient to rupture the protective webs and attract negative elementals, it is advisable to create chakral shields for the affected chakras and to create auric shields to prevent negative elementals from psychically reinfecting the patient. When a patient is very ill, the doctor usually puts the patient in an intensive care unit (ICU). Since the patient has a very weak resistance, he can easily get infected or reinfected if the necessary precautions are not taken to protect him. This is why he has to be confined in a sterile, relatively germ-free environment. In the same way, patients with severe psychological disorders should have a sterile psychic movement. If you think negatively of your patients, you unknowingly attack them psychically. This results in delayed recovery. Therefore, it is advisable to create chakral and auric shields. The shielding is...

Eros, Thanatos and Id Revisited

We have reviewed the medical disease model for mental disorders and now we will take a look at probably the most known model of all.  The psychoanalytic model was formulated by Dr. Sigmund Freud (1856-1939). As you can see from time of his life it is a very old model but it has been modified to reflect a more modern approach to mental illness.  We will start from the beginning and work our way through so there will be several articles related to this model. Freud as we know, divided the mind also known as the psyche, into three different parts.  He called these parts, the id, ego, and superego and they each had a different function. His whole theory was a developmental theory meaning it started at birth and matured as time went on.  In this article will just have time to review the various part and functions of the Id. Freud’s theory is a sexual and developmental theory Id The Id is present at birth; it is the part that is responsible for our basic needs.&...

Why You May Feel Anxious and Tearful

Everyone can feel down now and then, and even the food you eat can affect your mood, making you feel high or low. However, if you are consistently anxious and tearful you may be suffering from depression. People often do not consider themselves depressed, even when they are really suffering. Sometimes this is because they are in denial, and believe in keeping a stiff upper lip. They do not want people to know they are vulnerable and not coping well. At other times, people do not recognize that they are depressed because they have been going through a tough time for so long that they consider it normal to easily cry and feel terrible. If you have been stressed over a long time period you may have become depressed without stopping to look at how experiences are really affecting you. Typically, people suffering from depression that worry constantly, and easily breakdown in tears, have bottled up emotion. They are always putting their effort into trying to cope with what is really bothe...

Different Physiological Drives or Motives

There are different physiological drives or motives that are inborn and present at birth. These drives are hunger, thirst, oxygen need, sleep and rest, avoidance of pain, elimination drive, sex drive and warmth and cold drive, and companionship. Hunger is a powerful physiological motive. This happen when the blood level of glucose or sugar falls below a certain point, and the body needs to restore it making the stomach hungry for food. Thirst happens when the level of water inside the body decreases. The mouth and the throat tissues become dry and the nerve endings in the tissues are stimulated. Pixabay Oxygen need is more powerful than hunger and thirst drive for no one can ever live without oxygen. Deprivation from oxygen for an amount of time may cause severe brain damage. It can impair memory, make the sense to function poorly as will as it lead to paralysis. Sleep and Rest is another drive, the need for sleep and rest varies individually. Deprivation from sleep and rest wil...

Subliminal Stimulation: Fact and Fiction

Subliminal Stimulation Subliminal stimulation is the effect of stimuli that are not consciously perceived, like very short exposure to certain visual or auditory stimuli. A lot of myths concerning subliminal stimulation are present, and most people believe them. This article discusses the scientific evidence so far. Commercials at the Movies One of the most well-known examples of subliminal stimulation, is the occurrence of subliminal commercials in movie theatres, making people buy more snacks. This made people feel somewhat unpleasant, the idea that you could be made to do something you don’t want to, is not one you can easily feel comfortable with. The study results on which this idea was based, however, turned out to be fabricated to promote a marketing company that wasn’t doing well. Self-help Tapes In the ‘90s, self-help tapes were somewhat of a fad. By listening to tapes with soothing sounds and hidden subliminal messages, people could be stimulated to do...

Mixed Messages and the Double Bind

We left off in the history of Gregory Bateson’s schizophrenia project where he assembled a brilliant team to study family interactions as a possible cause for schizophrenia.  The group was convinced that patterns of communication were the reason for schizophrenia in families and so they looked to find these patterns. They believed that the communication within families was what led to confused patterns of speech noted in patients who were schizophrenic.   This theorizing led to Bateson’s famous publication introducing the double bind.  The team purposed that schizophrenics were not crazy, but were a product of a crazy family environment. The double bind was a situation where a person is trapped in a situation where he or she must respond, yet the messages he or she receives are contradictory and on different levels of communication.  The double bind is not just contradictory messages, the team elaborated on six points that created a double mind. ...

5 of the Most Common Causes of Nosebleeds

Epistaxis, or a nosebleed, is a common occurrence and for the most part is of little to no concern to most people. Though blood running from the nose can be a frightening experience, especially for a first-timer or a young child, most nose bleeds will resolve on their own. Knowing the more common causes of nosebleeds can help subdue fears and make the nosebleed more tolerable. Trauma Trauma directly to the nose or head area can result in a nosebleed. Trauma to the head that results in a nosebleed should be evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible. Trauma to the nose should also be evaluated, but trauma directly to the nose is usually more easily recognized as the cause of the nosebleed. The use of helmets and proper gear, especially when participating in sports, can help reduce the chances of trauma and nosebleeds. Dryness Living in a house or being in a room where the air is particularly dry can result in a nosebleed. This is because the tissues become dry and eventually they can...

Kite-flying Safety: 10 Important Rules

Flying a kite is so much fun you might be tempted to risk it when it is not safe. Don’t! The danger is often very great to you and other people. 1. Never fly kites near power lines. This is the number one danger to which kite-flyers are exposed. Do not fly the kite close to the lines or poles even though you are far away. When the string is dry, it should not transmit electricity, but do not risk it anyway. If it becomes tangled in the power lines, you will lose the kite. Never try to recover it. Kites are cheap. You are not. 2. Never fly kites in stormy weather. Even big, white, puffy clouds can have lightning, and the kite may attract it. Especially if the string is wet, the kite becomes very dangerous because the wet string will transmit electricity. 3. Never use anything but cotton string to fly a kite. Any kind of wire or string with metallic content will transmit electricity. You don’t want to be a receptor of lightning. 4. Keep your kite far from roads and highwa...

Are Love Spells Real?

Magic has been used to aid loves smooth passage since biblical times of old. The Egyptians thought nothing of rustling up the odd spell or two to make life go their way, and many wiccans and spellcasters who describe themselves as white witches claim to be able to cast love spells. From spells which are meant for people who want their ex love back, to those which claim to be able to attract a soulmate, magic is still being used in this age of enlightenment to help with love related issues. But are love spells real? Studies about whether love spells are genuine are few and far between, leaving us to examine what little we understand, and place pieces of knowledge together to form a complete picture. The reason people want to believe that love spells are real, and may employ a modern day spellcaster to use magic to help them achieve their amorous goals, are obvious. People can't control love, and may find themselves at its mercy, either saddened becau...

Operant Conditioning, the Law of Effect, Successive Approximations, and Shaping

Edward Thorndike (1874-1949) Thorndike developed the second theory which was born out of the learning theory.  He developed the theory of operant conditioning. He was interested in what the effects of consequences would have on a person’s or animal’s behavior. He took alley cats and caged them.  The cats discovered they could lift the latch and escape.  It started as an accidental act by one of the cats and then it became a learned strategy for all the cats. The law of effect Basically the law of effect states that behavior which is supported by a happy result will be repeated. On the other hand, behavior which is followed by unpleasant consequences will eventually stop. Consequences were the key to controlling behavior and the field called instrumental learning came about following this concept. B. F. Skinner (1904 – 1990)  Skinner modified the law of effect ever so subtly. He did not put as much influence on stimulus and responses in his th...

Therapy is Like Peeling an Onion

In therapy the clients will always come to the psychologist or counselor with what is called a presenting problem.  This is the reason they believe is causing the problem but rarely it is.  Therapy is the process of getting beyond the original complaint and digging deeper to find out if there are more reasons even more significant than the presenting problem.  Psychologists often use the analogy of peeling an onion to get through the various layers and get at the root of the problem. For example, a person may come into therapy stating that they have trouble making decisions and they don’t know why they have trouble making decisions.  No one would argue that this is not a great reason to seek help.  However, decision making may simply be a symptom of a greater problem the client is not aware of.  A child that is fed a diet of negative comments from their loved ones my lack self-confidence and self -respect.  Imagine being told all your life that...
